Seminar Description

Forensic Unpreparedness or SNAFU: Systems, Networks, and Architecture Forensically Unprepared

During the session we will be discussing why organizations are routinely surprised and unprepared to handle information incidents that require re-constructive investigations - forensics. First, we’ll review a basic network layout, what information should be available, and some of the things that could be done to ensure information is available when we need it. Then we’ll look at a couple of case studies.

The case studies are sanitized incidents from our experiences. We have changed names, places, and so on to mask any identifying information. And if you think you know who or what the incidents refer to, you’re mistaken. They are generally composites and the reason they may look like one you know might be that we see the same errors recurring throughout the industry.

Finally, we’ll go over some things you can do to help be prepared.
